review 1: I was interested in the premise, but this didn't draw me in.after a few chapters. Two stories in parallel, one of way back Eskimos in the Bering Sea are of Russia and of a young woman in Wisconsin who takes in abused sled dog. The book so supposed to lead to her getting into racing but I didn't get that far. Writing is not refined, and the characters weren't becoming like able. The historical part was confusing. There are too many books to struggle thus one that seems muddled.
review 2: I actually give this a solid 3.5. There are parts of this book that contain descriptive, emotionally evocative and poignant language. The structure is easy to follow and the author does a great job of juxtaposing two parallel stories that eventually merge. Parts of the stor... morey are spiritual, but I think I would have enjoyed this book more if the writing was more experimental, introspective and lyrical (and less "MFAish"). That is, however, my personal preference. This book is still a good, enjoyable read - "Louise Erdrich light." less
