review 1: The Numberlys is a truly visually striking book. As the first book Christina Ellis has ever illustrated, I was impressed by her perfect ability to take modern graphics to convey the story of how letters came to be. As the timeline of the story moves a long colors are incorporated to indicate the passing of time. By doing this Ellis paints a vivid picture to the reader that perfectly correlates to the author's telling of the story. Ellis' style is consistent throughout the book and remains true to the theme of the story and its characters. Because the illustrations are in skewed directions on each page, it keeps the audience engaged in the presentation of the book because in order to keep reading, you must turn the book and view it from different angles. For its excellence ... morein these areas I believe The Numberlys should be nominated for a 2014 Caldecott award.
review 2: Already knew the story of this from Moonbot's gorgeously produced app but hadn't realised there is a story book until a few days ago. The picture book is just beautiful, fantastic drawings and very simple text but I think it may be better appreciated by older children. The illustrations are very reminiscent of an old black and white film with a technicolor splash at the end. Stand alone amazing but further enhanced by the Imagnotron Numberlys app which adds augmented reality to the pages. less
