Proverbs 31 & Being Single

When I was just a young girl I would dream about meeting Mr. Right. I would dream about the moment a man asked me to be his wife, the moment I walked down the isle on my wedding day, and the moment I had my first child. I expected my happily ever after to happen around the age of 25. (HA! HA!) It seemed like the perfect age to settle down and start a family.

Oh how little did my little girl brain know that I would still be single at the lovely age of 28. When everyone else is settling down, getting married and having kids, I’m over here trying to figure out my life.

The first step to figuring out my life happened when I (finally) graduated college. The next step was accepting a full-time marketing position. The next, next step was turning in my 2-week notice at my first full-time position, to start my next adventure. (Yes! I accepted a new marketing position.) I’m slowing figuring life out. My next step is figuring out how to be a Proverbs 31 woman while single.

I’ve studied Proverbs 31 so many times. I remember working at Camp CHOF (just a a few (10) years ago, holy moly!) and talking in the dorm about how to be a Proverbs 31 woman. When I was in my teens, my mom subscribed me to Focus on the Family’s Brio Magazine, I still have the article in my bible about being a Proverbs 31 woman. BUT the three things Proverbs 31 focuses on is marriage, mothering and homemaking. So how does that work when you are still single at 28?

I think there are many traits in Proverbs 31 that women, either single or married, can live by. These should be things that we, as single woman, should be striving towards. So once we do find Mr. Right, we are prepared. We are ready to transform from a single woman of strong character, to a wife (and mother) of strong character.

  • Noble
  • Faithful
  • Strength
  • Selfless
  • Humble
  • Kind
  • Trusting & Faithful
  • Wise & Kind
  • Excels
  • Respectable & Admirable
  • Hard Working
  • Encouraging & Caring of others
  • Wisdom with money
  • Fears the Lord

I am praying that I am becoming a woman of character. A Proverbs 31 woman. My next prayer is that there is a man out there looking for a woman with these characteristics.

“She is clothed in strength & dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.” Proverbs 31:25

Of course, there are many verses about being a wife and a mother. Until my time comes to be a wife and a mother, I will focus on being a single woman of character with compassion, skills and wisdom that will (eventually) carry over to being a woman of character in marriage, in mothering and in homemaking.

I think these are traits all woman, whether single or married should strive for in their lives. What traits do you see in Proverbs 31? What traits do you see in yourself? Leave your comments below so other single girls can roll with the ever-changing tide, we call dating.

Keep Rolling with the Tide,
