Keeping secrets is second nature to Nearly Boswell. Living in a trailer park outside Washington, DC, with a mom who works as an exotic dancer, she knows better than to share anything that would make her a target with her classmates. Only her best friends know about her obsession with the personal ads, and Nearly hasn’t told anyone about the emotions she can taste when she brushes against someone’s skin.
Then a serial killer goes on a murder spree and starts attacking students, leaving cryptic ads in the newspaper. Nearly might be the one person who can put all the clues together, and if she doesn’t figure it out soon – she’ll be next.
My ThoughtsThe genre of this book is not really one I usually read, at least nowadays. Five or so years ago crime and mystery was one of my go to genres and almost the only thing I read. The cover and the synopsis really great and they were the main motivations behind my mood to try to read it.
The atmosphere murder mystery creates is really similar to the ones you see in the Bones and Elementary TV shows. I love those show and always try to figure out who is the culprit before it’s revealed. In this case I was unsuccessful in the endeavor. Mystery and even the investigation of it followed a quite absurd pattern that it was impossible to untangle it without help. I think this is a really positive development because it made the story even more exciting and adventurous. It makes the story unpredictable.
Despite the seriousness or the darkness of the plot I laughed surprisingly much. However, I think that the storyline would have been more realistic a lightly older group of characters, because the minor undercover agent is a bit too over the top. I’m a bit disappointed the romance is not exploited more even if it would have took the story into a different direction and the author wanted to concentrate more on the murderers and the secrets behind them.
The thing is that what really got my attention in the synopsis it was Nearly empathic ability. However after finishing the book I sad to realize that it doesn’t have nearly as much of a role as I hoped. It’s kind of unnecessary for the plot. Nearly doesn’t use it, she even takes extra precautions not to touch anybody accidentally.
I liked this book. It kept me engaged and has a lot of creative solutions but the structure of the story is not the best, kind of fluctuating excitement wise.
