Romance Dawn – Eiichiro Oda

Score 8
It’s only been about 2 weeks since I last read it. But I got a physical copy in the first box set, so obviously I had to read it again.

Romance Dawn is a prototype to One Piece. Luffy wants to be a Peace Main pirate (the kind that only attack or steal from other pirates and are in it more for the adventure), so he’s sailing around in a little dinghy for that kind of pirate. But he keeps running into Morganeers (those are the ones that pillage villages, and I’d imagine they’re the more classic kind of pirate, but toned down enough to be appropriate for Shounen). Then he runs into Crescent Moon Gary’s crew and uses their ship to get to a small island, where he meets a girl named Silk. Then, because Luffy didn’t tie them well enough, he ended up having to save the town from the pirates he brought with them.

It’s a fun enough read, and I don’t think much actually changed between this version and the actual version. Although I don’t recall the two types of pirates ever being mentioned in the anime, so that might have changed.

Still, I’d recommend this. It’s not like you have to be much of a fan of the actual series either, if you like pirates and can deal with one being made of rubber.
