review 1: I am most of the way through listening to the audiobook version of this book. I didn't read the first book (didn't even know it existed) but it doesn't seem like I'm missing anything. It might be partly the narrator's fault, since her tone seems to give way too much importance to things that seem pretty minor to me, but I am getting pretty tired of the overuse of metaphors and similes. It's similar to a lot of "chick lit" (a phrase I despise, but that's another rant), in that it tells, instead of shows the characters' history, so even when that history is important or complex, it ends up boring me.So far I like Louise as a character as I think she's a pretty interesting exploration of the "frigid wife." I'm interested to see how that wraps up, but I've seen one or two revi... moreews say they were disappointed with the ending.
review 2: This is a sequel which I did not know. However, it's a stand alone book, so it's fine to read without having read the other.Perhaps I am thick but I didn't see how the title fit in with the story. It's a lovely story, filled with various characters who are all brought together somehow by the cafe and food. It's about how we all have a story which some people are willing and eager to listen to, and others don't.I liked it. less
