This blog I give credit to one of my followers, He requested I write a blog about the pro’s and con’s of carrying a semi-auto pistol vs. a revolver. Let’s start by saying there is a reason almost every police agency in the United States no longer allows or issues revolvers to be carried on duty. There are several reasons for this, however the primary reason is ammo capacity. Your standard revolver typically holds 6 rounds where your standard semi-auto ranges from 15 – 19 rounds. That is a HUGE increase in rounds just in the gun, not including spare mags. In addition to semi-auto pistols ammo capacity, they are also substantially faster to reload, unless you’re Jerry Miculek reading this blog.
Since I like lists and comparisons, let’s compare the pro’s and con’s over semi-autos to a revolver:
Semi-Auto:

Revolver:

As you can see, there really aren’t many pro’s to carrying a revolver, especially if you’re comparing it to a modern day semi-auto polymer pistol. Are revolvers still awesome? Yes, they will always hold a certain “Dirty Harry” essence that let gun owners and collectors relive their child hood cops and robbers fantasies. However, from a functional purpose and concealed carry standpoint, revolvers are not the best option for the reasons stated above.
To wrap this up, I live by the idea that any gun is better than no gun, so if you are Jerry Miculek reading this, and you feel you are a competent revolver shooter, than by all means carry that dirty harry blaster. But for the typical concealed carrier a semi-auto polymer pistol is the better carry option in my opinion. The only times you don’t need more ammo is if you’re drowning or on fire! So carry, stay alert and be safe!
