review 1: Another disappointment, I'm afraid. It pains me to be negative, as the author seems quite lovely here a and at Facebook. Yet, this was, overall, a disappointing read. It had enjoyable moments, but much of it was skimable filler, particularly in the first half (too much repetitive dog and kid stuff). I'm really hoping Trevillion's book is on par the the Pirate's! This one sure wasn't - but at least no more Ghost!! (the only reason I rounded up) 2.5 stars
review 2: Another cracking addition to the Maiden Lane series, which I have hoovered up since discovering Book 4 while judging a competition. This story follows the adventures of Apollo Greaves - a brutalised hulking 'beast' of a man who has escaped four years of mistreatment in Bedlam and now lives in the
... moreruin shell of a burnt pleasure garden. We've heard of Apollo before, he played quite a big role in Book 6 as the twin brother of Artemis Greaves, the heroine of The Duke of Midnight. And I have to say I was mighty intrigued by him then, when Artemis's lover the Duke of Wakefield busted him out of Bedlam. And this story doesn't disappoint as our poor tortured Apollo is befriended by actress Lily Stump and her young son Indio, who live in the ruins of the theatre which borders the pleasure garden. Right from the start Hoyt takes risks with her characters. Apollo is not a handsome man, but he is magnetic and compellingly masculine (leading to some very HAWT sex scenes) and Lily is a fabulous heroine, both smart and bold and intuitive and yet vulnerable. This isn't my favourite in the series, probably because there is so much external plot to get through as Apollo struggles to discover the person who had him framed for murder and thus condemned him to a fate worse than death in the insane asylum, but it still delivers in terms of fabulously drawn characters and heated romance. There was also a delicious intro to the next hero and heroine - crippled ex-dragoon captain James Trevellian and Wakefield's blind sister Phoebe Batten. And some hefty hints at other possible heroes and heroines. I have to say I rather fell in love with the dastardly master manipulator Duke of Montgomery!! So I hope Hoyt has plans for him in the future. Because I have no doubt this series could run and run. And I for one am more than happy to keep on reading. less

Plot is a bit heavily reliant on unusual appearances but otherwise I enjoyed it.
