Senior English students are currently partaking in a “Social Issues” unit. Mrs. Moses (formerly Ms. Heidenburg) explained that this unit really tries to get students into research topics that are up and coming issues. Mrs. Moses continued, “When creating the topics, I tried to envision what would be largely debated during the next two presidential election, in 2020 and 2024.” Examples of some of the topics being researched are: Spin/Bias or Real vs. Fake: The Fake News Epidemic, The Future of AI: How Will Artificial Intelligence Affect the Future?, Media Streaming: The Effect of Media Streaming on the Next Generation, Climate Change: Cyclical or Catastrophic Risk?, Net Neutrality: Internet Censorship and its Potential Effects on Democracy, and Global Unemployment: How it Affects the Global Economy.
During this unit, students not only researched a relevant or social issue, but also created annotated bibliographies, rationales, delivered 8-10 minute presentations, and wrote a reflection. Mrs. Moses stated that students have enjoyed learning about new and relevant issues as well as finding their voices and opinions on globally important topics. Mrs. Moses concluded, “The seniors have been working really hard on these projects! With the two snow-days taking away time last week, they really buckled down to get these presentations finished on time for the end of the semester. They deserve a round of applause!”
