Teaser Poster and Theatrical Trailer released for READY PLAYER ONE – Get. Excited.

It was only summer last year that I finished reading Ready Player One by Ernest Cline and while getting halfway through it on a hot August summer day whilst sat by my beach, I suddenly realised at that precise moment that I had been reading probably one of the greatest holy grail of novels firmly rooted within nerdy popular culture. Highly recommended to me by a couple of people via social media, this novel completely sucked me into its story and its various virtual reality controlled fantasy worlds from its intriguing beginning all the way to it’s shattering end climax. Apart from Stephen King’s IT, this was perhaps the only other novel that I found myself getting totally lost in as a reader.  The common sayings ‘I couldn’t put it down’ and ‘it was a real page turner’ are coined as phrases that do get thrown around a lot these days but never have either been able to fit the bill so remarkably satisfying as they do here when giving Cline’s best seller the all high praisal. Not only does this author tap into such an expansive universe that brings about such endless possibilities but he also manages to chuck in every single film and comic book reference that made the 1980s such a rich and iconic decade to be a part of.

This past weekend brought us its first (unintentionally laughable) teaser poster (which is pictured above) and a second trailer (that you can view below) which serves as the film’s main theatrical trailer that gives us more of an in-depth look at our character’s motives, the main conflicts and of course, more story detail. I had hesitant reservations at first about Spielberg directing this one but after seeing both trailers, those worries have been confidently squashed. Of course, Ready Player One as a book kind of cements itself as a real love letter to 80s Spielberg and every other project he was involved in during that time so a big blockbuster adaptation like this one was pretty much tailor-made for him from the get-go. Saying that though, I may still have slight concerns over some of the casting choices, particularly Tye Sheridan as Wade Watts. In the book, Watts was portrayed as an obese kid with his alter-ego Parzival being a strong, courageous and heroic type and Mark Rylance as James Halliday didn’t sit too well with me either but then it always turns out differently to how you imagine them to be don’t they? I’ll be sure to reserve judgment for when I see the film upon general release like I always do anyway.

Regardless, this still remains one of my most hotly anticipated films of 2018, along with Avengers: Infinity War and The Incredibles 2. Oh, and if you still haven’t read the book yet, I wholeheartedly and highly recommend that you do so as soon as you get the chance. There’s still over three months until the film comes out so you have plenty of time yet..

What did you think of the latest trailer? Would love to hear what you guys thought so feel free to comment below.

Ready Player One is released in UK cinemas on 30th March 2018.
