The Long Weekend 3 (Pages 149 – 204)

SPOILERS!!!

Things get complicated for the characters. The first problem involves Colin Turner and Karen. When they have dinner alone in the hotel restaurant, Karen launches an emotional speech about how difficult life as a single mother is and how much she has suffered. She even tells him that she was in love with him, hoping he would leave his wife. Colin is gobsmacked but he also worries about the other diners, and then upset, Karen tells her she is going out for a fag. When minutes pass and Karen doesn’t return, he goes to find her, and Angelica says that Karen took a taxi. Checking then his mobile, he finds a text from her, informing him that she can’t cope with Chelsey, so she leaves her with him. So now he can decide to look after her or call social services. What a horrible woman! How can she be such a selfish coward! And now what will Colin do? He will have to tell his wife, which will threaten his marriage seriously. And poor Chelsey! When Colin goes to check on her, the girl is sleeping, blissfully aware that her mother has just abandoned her. I feel so sorry for her!

As for Claire and Nick, they aren’t handling things right, especially Claire. When she and Luca go to their room, Luca is excited after the conversation with Trevor and Monique about the prospective hotel in London. Claire tells herself that she can’t allow Luca’s amorous advances after what happened with Nick, but then Luca surprises him by asking her to marry him, and unable to find a way to stall him, she ends up saying yes and wearing his ring. Yet, she is still thinking about Nick and her decision.

As for Nick, he has trusted his friend Gus with his secret, and naturally, Gus tells him that he has lost his mind and can’t leave Sophie only days before the wedding. I can also understand Nick’s reasons and how he can’t marry someone he doesn’t love completely. But why didn’t he think about it before? Can he be sure that Claire is the love of his life? She is now a stranger because they haven’t seen each other in twelve years, and the woman he used to know was a teenager, and I bet they both have changed over the years. The idea of re-encountering the person you think is the love of your life is romantic and appealing, but the reality is quite different. And how can they make up their minds in just a couple of days? This is a huge decision, and shouldn’t they give themselves a wider margin?

And what is Trevor and Monique’s secret? Trevor is so keen on the project of his London hotel because it could help Monique, but how? Now he reflects that since Claire is reluctant to give the thumbs-up to the project, he will tell her about their problems, which might persuade her to give the go-ahead. I’m intrigued to know what Trevor is so eager to hide.
