review 1: Let's just consider this one big spoiler of a review because there is no other way to do it.It opens where it left off where Eren is presumed dead by Armin (a reasonable assumption as his leg and arm had been bitten off and he'd been swallowed whole). Armin moves immediately in shell-shock, freezing up, unresponsive in spite of danger. Once he gets a grip on his guilt, Armin is presented with even more horrible scenes of his teammates dead and dying. On the other side of the attack, Mikasa is kicking ass like nobody's business. It's very nice to see a girl who doesn't need rescuing in manga. Ironically, however, that's how her and Eren's friendship begins. The flashback is ten flavors of crazy-disturbing. When Eren and his dad visit her family (Eren doesn't know her) they ... morefind her family slaughtered and Mikasa has been taken by the kiddie sex slave traders (because dystopic worlds are good for that). Eren and Mikasa probably can't be more than 9-11 years old in this but it doesn't stop Eren from murdering the sex slavers and getting Mikasa to finish them off. So yeah, that happened.Mikasa fights on, and when reunited with Armin, she barely reacts visibly to Eren's death (inside is a different story). Unfortunately their base and supplies have been surrounded by Titans and is staffed by deserters and soldiers who've broken inside. To their surprise a new Titan emerges, fighting on their side. Even more surprising Armin who is intelligent and sweet, comes up with a plan to retake the base. So what he lacks in fighting skills (almost everything) he makes up for in strategy. It ends in another cliffhanger though something I already about because I watched the anime first. Eren appears out of that rogue Titan and his limbs have regenerated. The story is interesting (so long as we avoid the hows and whys of the Titans because the science is a tad loose there) but man, this is some ugly art. I was trying to be nice last review calling it experimental but now I've seen more of it. He draws these enormous foreheads and proportions are way way off. He can't draw people from the side and arms/hands seem to be afterthoughts. Normally this would be a deal breaker but since this is at least interesting I'll give it a chance.
review 2: So after the pretty impressive time span of the previous volume, this one takes place of just part of one battle, taking up maybe a couple hours, tops. And honestly, I like it better. The protracted look gives us a lot more time to get to know some of the characters, which is great. The central point in this volume concerns trying to save a supply depot, taking out the titans attacking it and resupplying themselves because they're almost out of the gas that lets them zip around. And as one of the characters says, their mobility is the only thing that's going to keep them alive. It's a nice way to attack the "we're coming together as a group and trusting/supporting each other" that stories like this always do. Except, you know, with a lot of death that makes it hard to tell who's going to be in the group in the next few minutes. Is there anything unusual here other than the body count? Not really. But the story is solid, and Mikasa at least is a fascinating character to follow. less
