2017 has been a pretty good year for films. With movies like Wonder Woman which helped empowered girls and women all over the world and The Shape of Water(check our review here), one of those very few movies that contain an original and one of a kind romance story between a mute woman and a fish-like creature(Amphibian man) it was a hell of a year. However not every movie managed to indulge in success. Below are in my opinion the worst movies of 2017. The list will however only contain films I watched which is the main reason why The Emoji Movie won’t be listed here.
5. Smurfs: The Lost Village
This 3D animated film was a reboot of the previous 2 comedic live action film. When the 2nd film in the franchise performed below expectations, Sony made this decision with hopes that it can regain its former success. However, instead of that, they made a film that was somehow worse than before making it an even bigger box office disappointment. Though it may achieve its purpose of entertaining very young target audiences, its bland and boring story may be the reason we won’t see another Smurf film for a while.
4. Suburbicon
In what is supposed to be one of the major Oscar contenders this year, it instead became one of the biggest disaster. As a big fan of Matt Damon and with a script from the Coen Brothers, I had such high expectations for the film. What I got was one heck of a mess with its story cramped story all over the place and hardly anything makes sense. This film had been in development hell for a while and all I can say is, it should have stayed that way. (Check our review of Suburbicon here)
3. Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is another example of a franchise that really didn’t need another sequel. The first 3 films were quite hilarious and was enjoyed by both fans of the book and audiences alike with the 3rd film being the best and ending it on a high note. 5 years later, here comes an unnecessary sequel. The Long Haul contains none of the original cast and lacks the unique fun and humour the previous had even though it still had its director. In other words, The Long Haul is best left forgotten as it is panned by both fans and critics alike.
2. Transformers: The Last Knight
The Last Knight is the 5th film in the Transformers franchise and definitely the worst. As a fan of the first 3 films, I must admit that from Age of Extinction, the franchise has been plundering ever since. This time around there is basically either no story at all, or is so complex and messed up that no one ever gets what’s going on. As usual, Michael Bay gives stunning visual effects and if you came just for that then you’ll enjoy it but otherwise, you’ll really be left disappointed.
1. Guardians
In an era where superhero films are the best thing to watch nowadays, Guardians is one of those very few exceptions. This Russian superhero flick contains an unoriginal and cliche story with very terrible and outdated special effects along with wooden acting by ALL members of the cast. It also has a forgettable villain which just adds fuel to the fire. Basically, whatever could have gone wrong in the film, do go wrong and whatever could have gone right, nothing did.
If you didn’t see any of the movies listed here then congratulations, you just saved yourself plenty of time and money! There are of course other bad movies that came out but perhaps they’re not as bad as this. If you thought about seeing anything here, do yourself a favour and watch something else.
Thanks for reading! Are there any movies I missed out? Don’t forget to like, follow and comment your thoughts!
