What Are You Reading Wednesday? – The Winter Witch

Hi everyone!!!

Here we are, my first post of 2018! So exciting! I’m sure you noticed this corner of the internet became very quiet at the end of December, but between holidays, birthdays, sicknesses and our furnace going out I was stretched a little thin. Thankfully life is settling down and I’m reading to take on some new challenges for the year, including a new day of posting so keep your eye holes peeled for that. I’m planning some new bookish content AND yoga content and possibly some other fun stuff and I am pumped! Do you have any new goals or challenges for the New Year?

On to the book stuff!!

What Are You Reading Wednesday? – The Scoop

After months of building friendships with so many bibliophiles on Instagram, a few of my booksta-besties and I have decided to start a weekly meme where we can all gush over what we are reading for the week.

The idea is that each week all of us book bloggers can write a post where we talk about the book or books we are reading for the week – and yes if you are still reading the same book for a few weeks in a row that is totally fine.  Just be sure to include the answers to the five questions for What are you reading Wednesday in your post.  Then hop over to one of the host sites and share your link!

Of course, this will be even more fun if you leave the host a comment, and then jump around to another post or two, or five, and gush with them!

We cannot wait to see what you are reading.

What Are You Reading Wednesday – The Nitty-gritty Share the book/s you are reading with their author, maybe even the cover… and then answer these questions for at least one of them.
  • Why did you decide to pick up this book – cover or content?
  • Who is your favorite character so far, and why?
  • Will you finish this one?
  • Finish the sentence:  This book reminds me of… (other books, movies, tv shows…)
  • What type of read is this one? (slow but interesting, cannot put it down,…)
  • Kendall’s Current Read The Winter Witch by Paula Brackston Synopsis from Goodreads:

Fledgling witch Morgana must defend her love, her home, and her life in this enthralling tale perfect for fans of Discovery of Witches

In her small early nineteenth century Welsh town, there is no one quite like Morgana, who has not spoken since she was a young girl. Her silence is a mystery, as well as her magic. Concerned for her safety, her mother is anxious to see her married, and Cai Jenkins, a widower from the far hills, seems the best choice.

After her wedding, Morgana is heartbroken at leaving her mother, and wary of this man, whom she does not know, and who will take her away to begin a new life. But she soon falls in love with Cai’s farm and the wild mountains that surround it. Cai works to understand the beautiful, half-tamed creature he has chosen for a bride, and slowly, he begins to win Morgana’s affections. It’s not long, however, before her strangeness begins to be remarked upon in her new village. A dark force is at work there—a person who will stop at nothing to turn the townspeople against Morgana. Forced to defend her home, her man, and herself, Morgana must learn to harness her power, or she will lose everything.

Just a little note, this says it’s the second book in The Shadow Chronicles, but it doesn’t seem to have a direct link to the first book other than also being about a witch. I started reading without any knowledge of the first book and haven’t had any issues following along. It reads as a standalone.
  • Why did you decide to pick up this book? – cover or content? Kind of neither? This book was actually given to me by a friend. She thought I would like it as I do enjoy a good witch story, but sadly it sat on myself for over a year. I finally decided to start it for my readathon prompt “book with snow on the cover” because I really didn’t want to buy anything new. I will say though that the synopsis definitely intrigued me and the cover is gorgeous.
  • Who is your favorite character so far, and why? I really love both Morgana and Cai (the two main characters). Morgana is silent, yet determined and strong-willed, while Cai is somewhat shy, yet hardworking and caring. The situation they find themselves in would be difficult for anyone, but I’ve enjoyed reading about how they navigate it and seeing them find steadier ground with one another. I’ll also say that at lot of the secondary characters are really great and can be quite entertaining, and there’s a perfectly vile villain.
  • Will you finish this one? Yes! I have a couple of other books by the same author that I want to read now too!
  • Finish this sentence: This book reminds me of…Practical Magic mixed with The Mists of Avalon.
  • What kind of read is this one? This is a slower paced read, as in it gives you lots of details and great imagery, but each chapter leaves me wanting more. I love books that are a slow burn.
