review 1: Another great Sandman Slim offering from Richard Kadrey, who is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. His conversational prose not only makes these novels quick reads, but also makes it exceptionally easy to imagine the characters, environments and action. It also doesn't hurt that it's chock full of dark humor and an abundance of pop culture references. If you like your novels with a dash of grindhouse, these are for you!
review 2: As usual, Spoilers, so don't read if you don't want to know what happens!---Richard Kadrey's rich use of language and the "don't give a damn" attitude of James Stark / aka Sandman Slim is what keeps me reading these books. We delve far more in the mythology of Heaven and Hell in this title - as you might guess.So, Stark start... mores of by looking for a missing boy. So he has to return to Hell, since he still has a score to settle with his arch enemy Mason. Mason is raising the armies of Hell to attack Heaven, but what he doesn't know is various forces, from an insane Angel once working for Homeland Security, to the Kissi (half formed Angels intent on causing mischief), and Stark himself are on his tail.Start has the ultimate key, a way between worlds, and through guile, trickery, wisecracking, and sheer bloody mindedness more or less gets his own way.Only it's never that simple in this world. God has a nervous breakdown, and is split into five entities. The hellions of Hell are really aiming for mass suicide since Heaven is closed to them, yet Start manages to (more or less) nearly force a whole army of crazies to finally settle a score.Fun, but perhaps binge reading them is souring them a little for me... they are short books!4.5/5 less
