review 1: Part police procedural, part supernatural thriller, and part love letter to London this is a hilarious murder mystery from Ben Aaronovitch. Peter Grant is an aspiring London policeman when he discovers that the case he is working on involves magic and ghosts. This leads to him joining the obscure unit of the Metropolitan police who investigate crimes involving the supernatural. What follows is a very amusing investigation with many digressions into the history, geography, psychography and architecture of London - sort of a magical mystery tour, with the emphasis on the magical. Well worth reading if you want something light and light-hearted.

... mored recommended this series to me. Right from the first chapter I knew I was going to like it. The characters are interesting, funny, and act like real human beings, even when they have unusual powers. The magical and supernatural elements aren't over the top or unbelievable, and there's a unifying theory to everything that happens. The main character, Peter Grant, is definitely not a Mary Sue; he messes up sometimes, and when he gets things right on his own, it's because he thinks things through, not because he's this "chosen" person who has things handed to him. I'm really looking forward to reading the rest of this series. less
