What I’m Reading in November (2017)

I read quite a few books last month so I decided I needed a break this month and put a pause on some of the books I wanted to read. So far I’ve been having a great reading month and in the words of CoverGirl, it’s been easy, breezy and beautiful.

The Five Love Languages: The Secret to Love That Lasts by Gary Chapman (Status: Finished)

Blurb: In the #1 New York Times bestseller The 5 Love Languages, you’ll discover the secret that has transformed millions of relationships worldwide. Whether your relationship is flourishing or failing, Dr Gary Chapman’s proven approach to showing and receiving love will help you experience deeper and richer levels of intimacy with your partner—starting today.

The Work: My Search For A Life That Matters by Wes Moore (Status: Finished)

Blurb: The Work is the story of how one young man traced a path through the world to find his life’s purpose. Wes Moore graduated from a difficult childhood in the Bronx and Baltimore to an adult life that would find him at some of the most critical moments in our recent history: as a combat officer in Afghanistan; a White House fellow in a time of wars abroad and disasters at home; and a Wall Street banker during the financial crisis. In this insightful book, Moore shares the lessons he learned from people he met along the way.

Amina by Mohammed Kabir Umar (Status: Finished)

Blurb: This is a timely political novel describing the actions of the eponymous Amina and her friends as they try to effect a change in the social status of Nigerian women. Dealing with pressing issues rarely appearing in fiction – the legal status of Muslim women; the restrictions on their activities; the effects of a corrupt patriarchal system on the society at large and women in particular; – “Amina” presents a unique view of the issues prevalent in modern Nigeria from a woman’s point of view.

Rebirth: From Grass To Grace by Juliana Olayode (Status: Currently Reading)

Blurb: Rebirth is a story of thriving in the midst of hardship. It is rightly subtitled, From Grass to Grace. Juliana Olayode tells of the many hurdles she had to scale and the obstacles she had to surmount in becoming one of the most sought-after actresses in Nollywood. From hawking on the streets to contending with sexually abusive neighbours to dropping out of school to failing at several auditions, she fought for relevance.

The Beginning of Guidance by Abu Hamid Al-Ghazali (Status: Currently Reading)

Blurb: Imam Ghazali’s Bidayat al-Hidaya is a highly motivational manual detailing the fundamentals of acquiring guidance through God-consciousness (taqwa). The three sections of this book are on obedience, refraining from disobedience, and the etiquette of companionship with the Creator and with creation. One of Imām Ghazālī’s final works, it embodies a lifetime of learning, experience, and spirituality and can be taken as an introduction to his larger works.
