review 1: I’ve been reluctant to read this book because it’s a series and I just hadn’t had the time for that. On the other hand this series popped up on my newsfeed so many times in the last months and everybody of my booksfriends loved it. So ….finally, with two weeks of vacation time, I started to read it.I admit, college/school trope isn’t my favorite, I’ve read already so many of them. But hey, everybody is so passionate about this one, what could go wrong?Okay, maybe I had to high expectations but after reading this book I still don’t get it, why do people love them so much? The book dealt with a lot of internal musings, flashbacks and insecurities and felt repetitive after a while. I’ve found the “two steps forward and one step back” routine boring and both... more MCs slightly unrealistic. The writing itself is good enough but not outstanding captivating.
review 2: Minor spoilers for the latter part of the book, ye have been warned, etc etc. Honestly mediocre. While this book has a really great character who I actually really liked more than the main character (Brad, if you're curious), the book has basically every cliché you can possibly associate with the gay high school genre. I honestly stopped reading the book and deleted it from my Kindle when the principal called Kyle and Brad "filth" in the third part of the book. I'm tired. I'm really tired of gay characters being unhappy in literature. And don't give me any of that "it's realistic" bull. While I understand that the book takes place in Texas, a place where the phrases 'happy ending' and 'gay people' are never in the same sentence, and even though I understand there's probably some kind of happy ending to this series, I have absolutely no interest in finishing it. Because this has all been done before. And it's ALL that's been done. I'm sick of it. less
