Young Adult series / Fantasy

THE GIRL WHO NEVER WAS is the story of Selkie Stewart, who thinks she’s a totally normal teenager growing up in Boston. Sure, her father is in an insane asylum, her mother left her on his doorstep—literally—when she was a baby, and she’s being raised by two ancient aunts who spend their time hunting gnomes in their Beacon Hill townhouse. But other than that her life is totally normal! She’s got an adventurous best friend who’s always got her back and an unrequited crush on an older boy named Ben. Just like any other teenager, right?

When Selkie goes in search of the mother she’s never known, she gets more than she bargained for. It turns out that her mother is faerie royalty, which would make Selkie a faerie princess—except for the part where her father is an ogre, which makes her only half of anything. Even more confusing, there’s a prophecy that Selkie is going to destroy the tyrannical Seelie Court, which is why her mother actually wants to kill her. Selkie has been kept hidden all her life by her adoring aunts, with the help of a Salem wizard named Will. And Ben. Because the boy she thinks she’s in love with turns out to be a faerie whose enchantment has kept her alive, but also kept her in the dark about her own life.

Now, with enchantments dissolved and prophecies swinging into action, Selkie finds herself on a series of mad quests to save the people she’s always loved and a life she’s learning to love. But in a supernatural world of increasingly complex alliances and distressingly complicated deceptions, it’s so hard to know who to trust. Does her mother really wish to kill her? Would Will sacrifice her for the sake of the prophecy? And does Ben really love her or is it all an elaborate ruse? In order to survive, Selkie realizes that the key is learning—and accepting—who she really is.

Goodreads

I am a big fan of the supernatural and one of my favorite subjects is faeries. The faeries I read a beautiful, strange and scary as …. So when I stumbled across The Girl Who Never Was (which I still don’t understand the title) I knew I was going to get it. This is a faerie book, it has a lot of typical faerie themes such as very beautiful, magic, cruel, courts and etc. However there were also some themes that are unique to this book that I haven’t heard of so that was a nice new twist. Faeries aren’t the only supernaturals in this book, there are a few lesser used beings in here and I love that Skylar included them but I wished she would have mention a little more about these creatures background. The story was really good and I did have an Alice in Wonderland meets faeries feeling in this book, it was so weird especially when it comes to keeping time. Things were confusing at times but that is what gives it an Alice feel and it wasn’t to bad. The plot flowed nicely and the writing was good. The characters were a mess and I loved them for it. Selkie is weird and doesn’t really knows she’s weird and just wants to be normal. Her Aunts are weird most of the time and always speak in riddles much like Ben who is completely adorable but you never know what’s going on with him (he has a good poker face). Then there is Kelsey, the best friend who is the bestest friend Selkie could have wish for because Kelsey is a true friend. Finally there is Will. Will causes a lot of drama, is a little shady and has a horrible romantic past. This group of people all band together and it makes for a really good story plus the fact that a mother is trying to kill her daughter. I am not going to lie, something about that theme calls out to me. It’s so unusual, a mother trying to kill a daughter in a young adult novel is a little weird and this isn’t even the first ya I read with this theme. It’s really hard to explain this book so … The Girl Who Never Was had a homicidal mother, faeries, a girl who was something all together different, magic, murder and a quest. I already have the second book The Boy with The Hidden Name and I already have a planned time to read it. Overall ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Novella

Before the enchantment breaks, Selkie thinks she’s just an average teenage girl…

It’s the beginning of summer vacation, and everyone at Selkie Stewart’s Boston high school is excited. Except for Selkie, who sees herself standing at the edge of an abyss of Nothing To Do. Selkie doesn’t want to spend her summer scouring the kitchen for gnomes with her crazy aunts or mooning over the enigmatic boy on Boston Common. So instead Selkie goes in search of a job. What she finds is a new best friend, a cute boy who might be more than he seems, and even more question about her mother and her past — and a sense that Selkie’s adventures are just beginning.

Goodreads

The Girl Who Kissed a Lie is the prequel to The Girl Who Never Was. This novella is a good introduction to Selkie’s strange and mysterious world and if the actual book is anything close to this novella it gonna be weird. I will be reading the novel soon and I do have the other books in the series. Overall ⭐⭐⭐ Advertisements Share this:
