review 1: Overall, I didn't think this book was bad.Like other readers, I didn't like not having a name for the protagonist until the end. And then, to name her after the author? I thought that was a bit much. Then the protagonist had no backbone! I mean, Monty gets her fired from her job and she says nothing? She doesn't toss him butt first out of her store? That was a bit too much to take for me.I liked the history portions of the story line. I went and looked up various people to see where plot met history. I think I'll try the next one and see how it goes.
review 2: As a mystery fan, I expected more from this novel. The title intrigued me, which is what ultimately made me pick it up, but the mystery was cookie-cutter, utterly formulaic, and easily solvable. I'm a huge
... more fan of Lillian Jackson Braun's Cat Who series and, like other reviewers, wanted this to fill that gaping hole in my literary life, but this just didn't do it. As an English teacher, I found great flaws with her diction. It was thesaurus-used, rambling description that didn't add to the narrative in any way at all. In fact, the unnecessarily large words really distracted me from the actual plot and I had to reread passages multiple times...which I didn't like the first time around, anyway. Admirable attempt, but you can skip this book. less
