review 1: This novel was unlike anything I'd read before - in the best way possible! Its ethereal lyricism and pervasive theme of hope put such a spin on a "death row novel" that made for a unique, other-worldly reading experience. I enjoyed the introspective searching done by The Lady, as well as learning more about York's childhood. It gave me a lot of insight into what makes people who and how they are - how much environmental influence, and how much inner determination? The emotions and themes from this book will stick with you long after reading it, and you wouldn't want it any other way. review 2: Dark. Wanted to put it down when it got really dark. Had to pick it back up in hopes of it finding light. Finding now that I am finished I would read on to find out mor... moree about the characters in the dungeons. The what's, why's and how's as horrible as they may be. The insights to the "ideas", the horses, the little men ... How they continue to function when the "soul" has left. The writing is beautiful and the juxtaposition of the title and the reality of the story is in itself oddly enchanting. less
