review 1: I think the authors of this book make a good point, which is that our current system of higher education does not require academic rigor of its customers/students. But it was written in a very dry and repetitive way. They have one standard for academic rigor based on how much a student reads and writes. I think that's an OK standard. But it's certainly only one way to look at things. Ultimately, I agree with the premise, but I think they need to do a lot more to make their case. And I think there are so many more interesting issues that could have been addressed in this book.

... more are initially startling and upsetting, but prove to not be that surprising when one takes into consideration our culture, how teachers are often perceived, and our nature to simply maintain the status quo. This was an enlightening read, although it was a bit bogged down by severe repetition and research-based technical language. less
