review 1: The Nikki Heat series is a story within a story based on the novels written by the fictional mystery writer Richard Castle from the TV series Castle. In the show Castle rides along with NYPD detective Kate Beckett and her homicide squad as part of his research for his new novel based on a female homicide cop. In the books the detective is called Nikki Heat and the writer is Jameson Rook. Get it-- Castle and Rook? But don's let the cheesy Nikki Heat name fool you, she is one tough cop. The plot has Detective Heat assigned a homicide involving a body found frozen in a suitcase. But we soon learn that the suitcase ties in to Nikki's mother's unsolved murder from a dozen years ago. The story of Heat's mother's murder is completely different from that of Beckett's, so it won... more't spoil the show for you if you haven't seen that storyline, and if you have, it is not a rehash. The story develops as a very good police procedural as Nikki Heat and her team of detectives, along with Rook, work on the two parallel cases, her mom's cold case and the new homicide. One amusing twist for those of you who are fans of Nathan Fillion (who plays Castle) from his Firefly/Serenity days is the team of detectives Malcolm and Reynolds who are bought in as additional manpower. Of course Nathan's character in Firefly was Captain Malcolm "Mal" Reynolds! The story was well written, filled with humor and plot twists, and kept me guessing to the the end. Highly recommended.
review 2: If you like the TV show Castle, you'll enjoy this book, "written" by Richard Castle himself. It reads like an episode of the TV show, although necessarily encompassing a bit more detail in descriptions. Generally entertaining, I was a little distracted by the varying use of surname and first name for the main characters throughout, as well as some abrupt shifts in storyline. Despite that slight drawback, it was an engrossing story with a (mostly) satisfying ending - leaving just enough loose threads dangling to hint at more to come in future volumes. less
