review 1: A great story it's not. Several characters appear tough initially but soon become as vulnerable as pieces of paper ash. The strongest one emotionally becomes the most wrecked. What held my interest was the author's use of his comments in first person, sprinkled throughout. They are handled very differently from the old "dear reader . . . ". They become commentary on writing, the writer's life, and his relationship to his characters. In the end, for Powers, that's all there is.
review 2: I read this book for my university class called Growing Up in America, which was basically about the advanced technologies found today and the ways people deal with the invasion of privacy and other consequences ensued. I usually do not enjoy books that I am forced to read
... more for school, but I loved this particular one so much that I even decided to write my final paper on it. I truly enjoyed writing my paper, rereading the whole novel several times to really get to know the characters and to make sure I didn't miss anything, albeit trivial. After everything was done, I did not want to part with Thassa or Russell, because they had such an impact on my life. I am glad that I was introduced to such an amazing novel, and this is why I go to school! less

Its moments of insightful brilliance far outweigh its cop-outs. A worthy read.
