review 2: It took me three attempts to finish this book, and in
... morethe end it felt like a colossal waste of time. This book was recommended to me by one of my professors who was teaching it in his post-modern lit class. I can see the reasons he was interested in it, but none of them really made up for the poor storytelling. There were some really interesting ideas: what is "truth"—-blurring the distinction between fiction and non-fiction, science and art. The meaning of/search for happiness. However, the way the book was written is simply horrid. The author inserts himself into the story for no good reason (I'm sure my prof loved it and found it so post-modern!), and the point of view shifts from third to first person in jarring ways. The story is almost completely lacking in character and plot. The major characters all have like, one personality trait that's hardly developed. The minor characters are worse...even their names are monosyllabic. It's like the author wants you to think he didn't put in any effort at all. The plot moves at a glacial pace, except for the really contrived relationship that eats up dozens of pages. Oh, and the contrived relationship only emphasizes how terrible Powers's figurative language is. He certainly has a...unique...way of describing physical interactions. I can't count how many times I stopped reading because the descriptions were so odd that I had to take a moment to either re-read or laugh. The plot picked up near the end and there was an unexpected twist, but it was too little, too late. I closed the book feeling like I wasted too much time reading something that was essentially pop psychology trivia trying desperately to be a profound novel. less

Interesting and worth reading, but probably won't become a classic.

Richard Powers is very clever. But sometimes he is too clever.
