review 1: This book gives readers a sense of the heavy toll that World War II took on soldiers and airmen in the European Theater. While the big chiefs like Bradley, Montgomery and Supreme Commander Dwight Eisenhower strategize and feud with one another over battle plans, the men who hit the beaches of Normandy and slog along against the Panzer divisions pay the heavy price for strategies and deployments gone wrong. One wishes the Germans would have surrendered before the Allies had to cross into Germany itself, but the carnage--and the bombing campaigns, which wipe out whole cities and terrorize civilians from Belfast to Berlin, goes on and on. Atkinson does a masterful job moving back and forth between the political battles at the top of the last year of WWII and the grunt's e... moreye view of the follies and bloody mash-ups of mechanized warfare. The chapters on The Battle of the Bulge and the failed Anglo-American multi-prong assault on occupied Holland (Operation Market Garden) are particularly harrowing.
review 2: My second reading of this masterful narrative of the final year of WWII. Overshadowed perhaps by the drama of D-day, the slog across France, the low countries and finally Germany was tough and bloody. More American GI's died in the last full month of the war in Europe, April 1945, than in the first month of the invasion. From the infighting between Eisenhower and British Field Marshall Montgomery to the suffering of individual GI's in frozen foxholes, Atkinson's account has the feel of the full story. After reading a chapter, my wife was hooked also. less
