review 1: I don't know I think it was a case of it's not you it's me...For some reason I just could not get into this story, from most of the characters to the plot I just really didn't like it. The reason it didn't get a 1 star is because I loved how the family went about explaining what gay meant to the youngest child and how they didn't claim that they were "different" but that they just liked other boys.I really appreciate this because there is already so much heteronormativity being shoved down our throats that I don't like having to read about it as well.
review 2: The Decisions We Make is a story about family, friendship, first love and self discovery. It alternates between flashbacks starting when Daniel joins the Walker family as a foster child and "present day
... more" during Daniel and Jamie's Senior year in high school. I enjoyed this format as the flashbacks complemented and informed the present day chapters well. I also really liked all the characters in the Walker family. It was such a pleasure to read about a realistic family who all supported and loved each other, especially how their mother loved and helped Daniel heal. Daniel and Jamie's relationship was incredibly sweet and such a joy to read about - their friendship as children really put a smile on my face. And as they got older, the way their relationship evolved was quite lovely.I did feel that what happened to Jamie was handled a bit too lightly, especially considering the level of violence described and the lasting ramifications to him physically and to his future. Also, a nitpick - I grew up in California and some of the references/language used seemed inauthentic/foreign.Overall, though, I enjoyed the story and would love to read a follow up on the two boys and the rest of the family. less
