review 1: Finally, a (fairly early) chapter book series I can wholeheartedly recommend to folks who say "We finished and loved Magic Tree House. What next?" (instead of just recommending another time travel series, when time travel may not be the element they loved). Like MTH, it involves travel, missions, and adventure; the reading is a little bit more challenging, but not too much (perfect for kids who have finished MTH); and there's a friendly ratio of illustrations to text. One thing: a group of Bedouin is portrayed as threatening and liable to kidnap you if you camp on their land. I don't know much about the Bedouin, but can imagine this bothering some.
review 2: This would probably be much enjoyed by middle primary aged children. And if I read a few more in the ser... moreies, I would probably warm more to it. It had some moments of charm, and some promising characters (in particular Greasel), although they are not well enough drawn yet to really appreciate much. An interesting thing, I hadn't appreciated before... when writing for this audience, characters probably depend on being part of a series in order to have room to develop. There isn't enough length to the text to do much with them in the first book. Hmmm. Very nice illustrations by Kelly Murphy, in an unusual, heavily hatched style. (Kelly gets 4 stars:-) less
