review 1: It’s a little different trying to write a review of this book compared to others because of the way it’s structured. It’s not unusual for a superhero book to have multiple writer and artist working on it, but in the case of this book its three different writer and artists teams working on three different stories. I thought the best way to review this book would be to talk about each section differently and then give an overall impression. The first story is the actually one-shot comic Marvel Zombies Dead Days by Robert Kirkman and Sean Phillips. I really like this story. The best part seems to be the overall hopeless feel of it. The Avengers get infected right off the bat and quickly infect everyone else. It only takes a day for everyone to be either eaten of infect... moreed. Sean Phillips art is just magnificent. Not only does he have a really great style, but it’s so well suited to drawing this story. After I got done reading it I kept thinking how great it would be to see him working on Spider-man, or the Fantastic Four, or Nick Fury, and on and on until I’ve listed every character that appears in the story. Kirkmans’ writing is no joke either. He is mostly known as the writer for The Walking Dead, but he falls into place writing this story with ease. Many times when a “Hot” writer comes from an independent title to a mainstream book it feels a bit clunky. Like the writer is unsure how to write the voice of the characters. But that’s not the case for Kirkman at all. His Magneto feels like the real Magneto. Same for the other characters, they all feel like the real versions of themselves, and not some forced voice put into them buy a less talented writer. I would say that this is my favorite story in the book. I have mixed feelings about the two Fantastic Four stories written by Mark Millar and drawn by Greg Land. I like the Fantastic Four very much, but for the most part I’ve only read the early Jack Kirby and Stan Lee stuff. So reading a story that takes place where the Fantastic four are just starting out feels like coming home. But it seems a bit off. It has that feeling of a direct to DVD movie that serves as a tie-in to a big summer blockbuster. None of the big name actors wanted to come out and play a second time, so they had to go with people who look like them. You’re watching it, and it’s cool to see the story progressing, but you know it’s not what you really want. There are a few good parts though. I like the way Reed acts, compared to the Reed of the regular marvel universe. I always thought Reed was the biggest dick in comics, but the Ultimate version is more likeable. It’s cool that they purpose that his behavior was changed to be more daring and reckless because of the accident that gave the Four their powers. Greg Land’s art is pretty shitty in my opinion. It might be a bit different if the color was also different, but I doubt it. I just don’t like it. The Final story is three issues from the Black Panther series written by Reginald Hudlin and drawn by Francis Portela. It seems to come into the middle of another story, but what happen before must not have had the zombies in it; therefore it isn’t collected into this book. We are brought up to speed rather quickly though, which is something I really appreciated. I like the art in this story. It’s somewhat the hyper blank style I often find in comics, and always hate, but for some reason it works fine here. While reading the story I couldn’t help but wonder if the writer, or editor, just wanted to cash in on the Zombie craze happening at the time. It seems out of place. I was also a bit upset that in both this story, and the two Fantastic Four stories, no one really gets infected with the zombie virus. In the other Marvel Zombies stories people are getting bitten left and right. Here it seems almost impossible to infect to a hero. Overall this isn’t a bad collection. I would not give this collection to someone who had an interest in the Marvel Zombie series, even though it would seem to come first in that series. So you can take from that statement how much I value this collection.
review 2: Read this to get over a complete turkey of a book that I've just read... Marvel will fix the void... art and a decent story.. and one with zombies even better! Naturally ploughed through this and it was just the ticket. The cover art (and the individual comic covers inside) are so gruesome and well done and the story is good despite being heavily based around the Fantastic Four who don't really do much for me! Definitely good for a Marvel enduced distraction but perhaps not one of the better storylines! less
