review 1: I never would have read this, if it wasn't one of two free books in my hostel not in German or Danish, and if I wasn't too broke to go to a bookstore. But saying that, it was actually pretty good. I read it in three days while travelling through airports, and I actually really liked parts. It was pretty great to see all the languages people would have spoken in 11th century Europe, and it was really enlightening to see what life was like in Norman England, instead of just hear the date 1066 repeated.
review 2: For about 300 pages -- I can be precise: from chapters 2 to 21 -- I was entranced with this book. With the creative description, with its people and their interaction, and with his sheer adventure-telling ability. Unfortunately it didn't maintain itself
... morefor me. The sentences to swoon at became less frequent, as did the laughs, and my love of the group members began to drift. The adventures were still there, certainly. But I wasn't gripping my seat as I had done. It remained a stand-out book, but my experience is shaped by that elusive magic spell that came and went. Of course it's no mean feat to cast a spell even for a third of a book. The last stretches I felt weak, which makes a review hard to write...I look forward to his next, where he travels even further. less

Some sections hard to follow with who's who and who's talking. But loved it.
