review 1: This read was like pulling teeth. I was interested at the beginning, and gave up towards the middle. Went back to it, and finally rested my curiosity about the ending. The book read like a screenplay. Hmm. Wonder if that was his intention. I did not like all the flashbacks; and there were times the present just rambled on into flashbacks. I had to go back and read exactly what time and place the author was talking about. Sad story, but the author did not go deep enough into the characters to make me feel for them.
review 2: Butler will go to the quasi-happy ending and after reading so much contemporary fiction, I find the almost happy ending refreshing. Butler does a masterful job of laying the emotional groundwork for a couple in crisis and how the crisi... mores comes about, but by telling it in flashbacks, plays against pre-conceived notions and cultural prejudices to show how our past infringes and enhances our present. A Small Hotel has a big heart. less
