The Chathrand Voyage
review 1: "The Ruling Sea" by Robert Redick. The setting takes place in Alifros, the current name of the planet. In Alifros, Young Pazel and his old tutors' friends are looking for allies on the island Bramian. Here they are to find the followers of the Old Faith and subjects of the 'God-King' Ness. When nearing the end of their voyage, rats grew to gigantic sizes and attacked the crew. After the battle with the rats, everyone had a hard time staying awake as the remaining six hundred ixchel overtook the ship and took it for themselves. The ixchel lord-ling told everyone that he slipped a poison into the water supply that when ingested would cause drowsiness and imminent sleep. On leaving the Vortex; a giant whirlpool that engulfs even the clouds, the ship hits land. This land a vete... morerinarian calls the South-lands, contains humans, ixchel, dlomu, and many varieties of animals. The main characters are Pazel, Thasha, Neeps, Arunis, Captain Rose, and Lady Oggosk. Pazel and Thasha are currently the saviors of the 'Chathrand' and are struggling with their feelings towards one another. Neeps is a Sollochi boy who is quick with his actions that usually get him into trouble. Arunis is an evil and insane mage of Alifros who is bent on destroying the world with the artifact known as the Nilstone. Captain Rose and Lady Oggosk are in league of commanding the 'Chathrand' and her crew. The plot is around the mid 1600's of Earth and are in the age of exploration where everything depends on ship or horse. There were no airplanes yet but there is a design of a pistol. I offer recommendations to thirteen and above age level readers. For many reasons that I won't divulge except one, that it's rated m for mature due to some graphic writing and cursing.
review 2: Very interesting extension of the first book. I really liked where the story went from the beginning. This is a darker book, the characters are deeper and more thoughtful, and the pace is quicker. There are some moments that seemed too contrived, too 'deus ex machina' to me, like when Thasha does 'something' to the storm and they all sail peacefully off. I mean, it seems like that book of hers is just too convenient as well. Still, I like the direction and I'm definitely reading on. less

Great suspenseful fantasy, but not cheesy. I think book 3 will be very good, can't wait to find out.

The plot and writing both devolve precipitously. I could not finish this book.
