review 2: Walser's The Tanners is a gentle meandering tale of a family and, especially, the wayward Simon, whose f... moreree-spirited wanderings form most of the story. The plot is thin, but one does not read Walser for the plot. Simon is a somewhat cheeky lad who speaks his mind honestly and without malice, dropping in and out of employment, walking for days through hills and valleys, feeling love, touching beauty, simply existing ... what's it all about? Nothing, really, and that's the sheer pleasure of it. less
