review 1: I would give this 3.5 stars because Black's writing is so good. I was absolutely in love with her novel, Life Drawing, so I decided I wanted to give her collection of short stories a try. I enjoyed it up until midway through, then the stories all just started to sound like each other/became boring and jaded. I didn't understand the point of some of the stories except for the central theme of loss that ran through each one. Definitely read Life Drawing if you're going to read something by this author -- you'll be a little disappointed if you read this first.
review 2: I loved this collection and am happy to see that many of my Goodreads friends did, too. These are graceful, aching, beautifully written, and deeply felt stories of motherhood and fatherhood, marria
... morege and divorce, aging and death. Here you find writing for grownups, with a wide wisdom and a balance even when detailing the lives of the insufficiently wise/balanced (and who of us is not among these?). less

A lovely narrative voice, but a disappointingly consistent voice in this collection.
