review 1: Re-reading this today, it's hard to imagine this book could have caused such a stir when it was first published in the 70s and that it could have generated an entire sub genre--the Medical Thriller. I bet it wouldn't even be published today: cardboard characters, a plot almost anyone can see right through and identify the villain (although I don't remember that being so easy when I read it when it was published), the ridiculous amount of medical information--the bad guy falls and it's his 7th rib that's injured. Really? Yet it started a revolution, and those of us who appreciate a good thriller are grateful. Despite Cook's often infelicitous prose, he writes a compelling tale. The pacing builds in intensity and he uses time/date stamps at the heads of the chapters to under... moreline the urgency. If not the first to do this, he must be an early adopter of the practice--it always makes a book move faster. Or seem to. He's got a sympathetic investigator--his David--who fights against evil doctors here, sometimes big medicine--his Goliath. And wins, of course, but not before passing through terrible trials and facing death. He's a master at building suspense and this is a creepy, nightmare story. Cook was also a champion of female protagonists. Here Susan fights the men-only medical establishment, especially in surgery, and Cook is clearly on her side. LaVoy does a great job with the narration, creating sympathetic characters and truly evil ones. she excels at propelling listeners through the story, without simply reading faster, and in reflecting the chilling tone. If you read it, read it for the nostalgia, the trip back to where it all started.
