review 1: The story has a promising beginning with a stem-cell research. Then there is a tedious body part with the detailed account of the "war" of Long Island Mafia and the Japanese Yakuza, and the rivalry between the two Japanese organised crime leaders, all interlaced with the minutely detailed account of the affairs of the Office of the Chief Medical examiner. Everyone who is anyone is given a name, American or Japanese, even if the character never appears again. For good measure, the opposing Japanese leaders have both names with the same initials. While the reader is trying to grasp and connect all that, there is the kidnapping of a baby, as if the writer suddenly decides that the story has long lost its excitement and suspense so he has to rekindle the reader interest. The l... moreong epilogue tries to wrap up all the loose ends in a hurry.
review 2: I picked this book to read becuse I have enjoyed Robin Cook's medical mysteries in the past. I thought that CURE was more of a "crime mystery" than a medical mystery. Yes it was about stem cells and lots of stuff that I really didn't understand, but unlike his other books which told about people who either benefitted or were hurt by the "medical disovery or procedure" that the book was written about, this one only dealt with the crime of stealing medical, or intellectual properties. It seemed to be more about big crime organizations and the Japanese Mafia. There was a good subplot about a kidnapping of the child of the NYC forensic pathologist who was searaching for the identity of the Japanese scientist who was killed by the Japanese mafia after he defected with his discoveries to a US company. less
