review 1: A prequel to Robin Sloane's Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore, which is hands-down my favorite book I've read this year. A brief little volume, it gives some back story on how Ajax Penumbra encountered and came to be employed at the bookstore and hints at the great story to follow. An interesting shift from second- to third-person narration happens when Penumbra reaches San Francisco, which I assume is significant, as he comes into his own. Nowhere near as exciting as its precedessor, it's still a good read that marries literature and technology in a fascinating way. Thanks to Philip Bader to clueing me in to this prequel! I look forward to more from Robin Sloane!
review 2: Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore was a very odd book that took me on a whirlwind adventur... moree! It holds mystery, imagination, and even a bit of wizardry.This book follows Clay who after losing his job due to the Recession, lands a job in Mr. Penumbra's 24- Hour Bookstore. It is an odd store with odd books where almost nobody seems to buy anything. Instead they borrow these obscure old volumes that lurk in shadowed parts of the store. As Clay starts to investigate the mysteries of these old bound volumes he is introduced to a whole other underground world where certain secrets are guarded.This book had an almost occultish feel to it. Anything that loves books and bookstores I think will love this novel. I also think anyone that loves history will like this novel. It is definitely an exciting book with lots of adventure. I as the reader became a detective trying to figure out the secrets. less
