review 1: I want to say first that this is overall a good book. I got very useful insights and advises from it. I also enjoyed reading it. However, I believe the author followed the "write the book to yourself" principle too far. The book sometimes feel just like reading somebody's notebook. That may be because each chapter is self-contained, but sometimes I got the impression I was reading something that wasn't written for a public audience. Some examples were particularly good, others were weak at best. Conclusion, read it if you want a gentle introduction to Stoicism, pass along if you're already familiar with it.
review 2: Ryan Holiday gives us a practical playbook to overcoming the many obstacles that life presents us. It is an especially good read for those of us wh
... moreo are committed to living a life of doing things and must prepare for what that entails. The book is filled with examples from history of how multiple heroic figures dealt with the challenges of their time and succeeded not in spite of these obstacles but because of them. This is a good follow up read to Marcus Aurelius' Meditations as Ryan bases many sections of the book on Stoic philosophy. Definitely going to keep this book nearby as a handy reference when dealing with life's challenges. less
