review 1: If you like the show, this doesn't disappoint. the comic really keeps the feel of the show, they could easily have been disloyal but they've kept everything that makes Adventure Time what it is. It's still just as crazy, surreal, sweet, humorous and TOTALLY MATH! It even keeps some of it's slightly adult tendencies, Marceline asks Princess Bubblegum what's so bad about her turning into a huge tentacle monster. For those of us older readers that joke takes on a new level of cringe worthy humour. Vol. 1's story doesn't feel out of place as if it were on tv. Bonus comics and footnotes at the bottom of each page are hilarious and add a little something extra. The artwork at the back of the book is beautiful, whether you're an artist or not you can definitely appreciate it. Wha... moret time is it? ADVENTURE TIME!!
review 2: Stuff I Read - Adventure Time Vol 1 by Ryan North ReviewAs a huge fan of Adventure Time without a television and without AT&T Uverse, my options for getting the actual show are basically waiting until it comes out on DVD. And to put that in perspective, the Season Three DVD just came out. That's a long wait to get my fix of Adventure Time, which is why I was so excited to learn that BOOM! was coming out with an Adventure Time ongoing comic. And, first volume in hand, I have to say that it lives up to the high standard set by the show. The writing blends the humor and off-the-wall antics of a children's cartoon with the more adult flares that children would otherwise miss. I mean, a child might think that Marceline saying she can turn into a tentacle monster to Princess Bubblegum is just silly, but for those paying attention there are some very adult implications, and it's awesome. The art goes a long way in solidifying the feel of the book. The main series is not so much about artistic license as it about licensing art. The characters all look the way they do in the show, and move the way they do in the show. Everything feels the same, from the coloring to the darkness. The actual art is fun, moving, and cartoon-ish, which makes it a perfect fit for the source materials. Close-ups and ridiculous faces are common, just like in the show, and used effectively. The "In The Sun" joke in the last issue of the collection was particularly hilarious, and I must say that the quality of the art was impressive throughout. For all that the art stays true to the show, though, it is the writing that manages to give the comic the real flavor of authenticity. Everyone sounds like they should, which is difficult without the actual voices to listen to. But with this comic I could imagine the voices, could hear them in my head as I was going. And it fit perfectly. Finn and Jake are still Finn and Jake, and each character comes across as fitting, as appropriate, as hilarious. And the first volume is rather ambitious in its scope, having the Lich reappear with a bag of holding to end the world. The settings are fun and the story draws in all the series regulars, from Finn and Jake to PB and Marceline, to Ice King, LSP, BMO, and many others. It also introduces new characters, though, like Desert Princess. And the series moves right along like a full episode of the show, the action fun and ridiculous but also building to a satisfying conclusion. The first volume is all the one story with the Lich, but it promises to explore areas perhaps left unrevealed in the show. If nothing else, the comic serves as something to hold me over while waiting for more of the show. The humor fits right in, the characters are familiar and amazing, and overall the comic manages to feel like an extension of the show, the quality just as high. Really there's not much to complain about, though perhaps this first story was a little safe, a little tame from the get-go. But it sets up a lot of good things, and makes me excited for more. And for that I'm giving it an 8.75/10, less
