review 1: I never feel compelled to write a review on a book I have read...maybe it's because I associate it with grade school and the countless, similarly worded book reviews I was forced to pen...or maybe it's because I have yet to come across a book that actually warrants a few words in a review because it is just that good. I am going to go with the latter on this..I thoroughly loved this book and HIGHLY recommend it! I will be honest, the one little caveat that took me awhile to get over was the author's choice to not use quotations for any of the character dialogue...but it only took me a couple of chapters to get used to it...the character's voices were all very distinct so that there was never any confusion as to who said what...and the style ended up working very well, in ... moremy opinion. This debut novel and the author's descriptive writing style resonated deeply with me...so much in fact...that I plan on picking up Jane's Melody next...
review 2: I am torn about reviewing this book. The author is truly a gifted story teller. I loved the perspective. I did not love the story. It was so totally outlandish in parts it made daytime soap operas seem like the everyday mundane. Turns out it was a story of self discovery masked in a weird high powered stakes money game ... kind of reminds me of a laundromat- ice cream parlor I saw in a tiny town in rural Wisconsin. Its just not something I would expect to see paired together. less
