review 1: “The Raft”“I’m so sorry…” “Then I cried and brought the board as hard as I can on the seals head.” (Bodeen, page 155)The famous author S. A. Bodeen wrote the intriguing story “The Raft” the story takes place in the Hawaiian Islands. The story begins with Robie, the main character staying at her aunt’s house in Honolulu her aunt needed to travel for a few days and left 16 year old Robie on her own. A man in the street harasses Robie. Robie is frightened and wants to go to her parents that are in Midway Island. Robie takes a flight the next morning to midway. The planes then crashes the only survivors are Robie and the co-pilot. Robie puts the co-pilot to the water so that she can empty the survival raft. She loses him and is on her own. She creates an... more imaginary co-pilot to fill in the empty space in her mind and heart. Robie lands on an island and needs water and food. Robie is on the border of going insane. Finally Robie is rescued and goes back to midway. Thus this thrilling short story was developed trough the use of irony. The author S. A. Bodeen used elements of fiction to develop her ironic story “The Raft”. It was a desperate situation for Robie she is filling the empty spaces with her imagination. Max was gone she had killed him and then she filled the loneliness with a imagined Max. “ I was more than aware that I created him”. As one can see “The Raft is a very ironic and suspenseful story. The exiting story “The Raft” developed its suspense by using cliffhangers. When Robbie started halucinating she thought that sharks were going to eat her and the it was a compleate blackout when she gets too scared she imagines. As one can see, Robie is having a hard time surviving and is lonley.
review 2: Recently, I read the book "The Raft" written by S.A Bodeen, and I truly enjoyed it. I am not a huge reader, and when I do read, I often don't enjoy the books. However, this book was an exception. The book is about a young girl, about 15 years old who lives in the Midway Atoll in Hawaii. She stays with AJ, her aunt in Honolulu for a while until AJ needed to leave for work. After a few days of being lonely and scared, Robie decided to book a flight back home, but was not able to contact her parents and tell them. The only people who knew she was on the flight were herself, the pilot, and Max, the new copilot. The plane gets caught in a storm, and Robie was forced onto a raft with Max, as the pilot died. The book shares the story as Robie and Max fight hunger, thirst, and the danger at sea. It is a great book that makes you feel like you are a part of it, I only have a small complaint, and I would recommend it to most readers. "The Raft" is a true page tuner, which is one of the reasons why I loved it. Once they got on the plane, there was never a time when I got bored of reading it. I was always interested, and there was always something new happening, but at the same time it was not too exaggerated. The book is easy to understand, and is also great because it helps you feel like you are a part of the experience. The way that the author chose to include all of the senses, at many different times, helped it to make you feel like you were there. For example, when the plane is about to crash, and Bodeen includes all different parts of the shouting, things falling over, and the shaking. On page 25, the author writes "Now it felt as if we were in a snow globe that someone just shook and shook." When reading this part, I could feel the intensity, and because of all the senses Bodeen included, it felt like I was there. My only complaint for this book is that some of the things about Robie's life before the crash seemed a little bit cheesy. For example, the book started off with Robie piercing her nose, complaining, and other things that made it seem like the author was trying to hard to have the young readers relate to it. For example, the places Robie would go "Starbucks was on the first floor of AJ's apartment building, and every morning, I ran down and got myself a grande vanilla bean frappucino." (page 9), the shows she watched, and some of the things she did seemed like there was to much effort to make the reader relate. Which personally, I am not a fan of. I don't always love trying to relate to the book, I like reading other's stories instead. I would recommend "The Raft" to any young reader who loves a good adventure or suspense book. As I said before, there is never a part when you feel bored or confused. New things are always coming up, like plot twists, and new problems that they must face. "The Raft" is a great book, but would probably only be most enjoyable for teens to read. I only say this because it was not a very challenging book, and because it just doesn’t seem like it would be as enjoyable for older people. Even though I did like the book, I’m sure that there of plenty of books like it that are much better. less

She doesn't really seem to learn anything from the whole experience. It's weird.
