review 1: This is the fist title for this year's Primary Source Book Group on Dystopian Fiction. By the end of it, I decided I like the main character, Laurie, a teenager living in London. At first I found her a downright selfish twit. This is not the London of Kate and Will, though, it is a London forced into energy rationing and bracing for what ends up being a terrible flood. Told in Laurie's very authentic voice, not only do readers witness how this stressful situation brings on major dysfunction in her own family as her mother and father see the future very differently and her sister Kim gets involved with the Black Market, but Laurie herself undergoes a transition from cynical resister of all the "green" efforts to seeing the value of how people working together can achiev... moree great things. I liked that about her. A good title for YA readers to understand climate change.
review 2: I had high hopes for this book, the premise was interesting what with the very real problem of carbon emissions, global warming, the energy crisis ect. and what governments might do to keep it from it getting worse and whether it'll infringe on the public's civil rights ect.But this book did none of that, it started out alright, but gradually the story telling drifted away from the main (and more interesting plot of a national and global crisis) and more and more to do with teenage drama ect. Maybe it was the formatting but I really couldn't get into this book, I had to leave it unfinished because I just wasn't enjoying it. less
