review 1: I read this book at the suggestion of my 5th grade son. I did not realize it was book two in a series of 3. So need, ses to say I was a bit confused and felt as though much was missing such as character development. Often I felt like the story told instead of showing, like details wer e left off. Over all the story is good and for sure in the fantasy book to reads but I sure wish I would have read the first book before and the 3rd book was already out to read.
review 2: Our hero from the eponymously named first book in the series is almost 13. He is reasonably confident in his ability to draw magical power from the Urwald into himself; he is deeply troubled by the knowledge that trees are being cut down at an alarming rate, and by the knowledge that he seems
... more to be the only one who can feel the trees' pain, or care. His animosity toward Reven is compounded by complicated feelings for Elfwyn, and the Bonemaster has broken his wards and is more dangerous than ever. Simon sends Jinx to Samara, secretly, to try to get a particular book necessary in the defeat of the Bonemaster, and to learn more about KnIP, a type of magical spell. Jinx is in way over his head, but as usual, when forced to cope, he does. This book is quite a complex fantasy for elementary school readers; it was complex for me. The characters continue to be enjoyable and the world-building interesting. Blackwood intends at least one more book due to an abrupt ending for this second volume. 5th grade and up. less
