review 1: Highly readable and brilliantly honest about the impact on a family of the birth of a profoundly neurologically damaged baby. The opening chapters have the best writing. I mistakenly thought I was reading a memoir at first. Ambiguous and uncomfortable feelings are well explored and this is the outstanding feature of the book. Some of the more novelistic devices and characters did seem rather contrived. However another feature of the book - the recipes - went down very well. This book is a mixture of medical information, confessional, romance, travelogue and cook-book - not all of it successful but certainly worth attention.
review 2: The story starts off utterly raw, as baby Freya is born disabled without warning. The doctors can't or won't explain what the pr
... moreoblems are and what kind of life she'll have, and the parents cannot cope with the disruption. But, they carry on to their planned new life in France, trying to move on, alternately trying to figure out how to care for Freya and hoping she dies suddenly and saves them the trouble. They character they meet in their new French home are eclectic and engaging, so well drawn you cannot help but love them, as Anna also comes to realize. While she cannot have the perfect mouse-proof kitchen, she has a pretty good and very full life. less

Wanted to scream at the parents. Couldn't imagine not loving my child unconditionally.
