review 1: So I got this book through Goodreads First Reads giveaways. It is an advanced, uncorrected , and unamericanized version of the book. And I put emphasis on the uncorrected bit because I will talk about that here because the author does choose to stylize some of her writing in parts for various reasons. So know that what I write about that might not hold by the time this is released. That out of the way. More despair coming. More teen romance, with a love triangle that is desperately and mostly able to pull off it being different than it's contenders. And more talking about evil, and about what we are born to be and what the culture around us molds us into through its assumptions of us based on our backgrounds, how we dress, ext. Oh, and racism, lots of magic racism.... more This book was a fast read. I do wish that more time had been spent on the end though. See in the book there are two characters that Nathan must retrieve/have join him. One is obvious, his love interest. Female love interest, Annalise. Who everyone in the book pointed out shouldn't be someone he fixates. Yes, I get it. She was the only person not related to him that treated him decently. Yes, having a relationship with her and not Gabriel is more socially acceptable and despite what Nathan does, he wants to be accepted and be good. And no, being gay doesn't make you evil, but that's what people preach, like the White Witches who think of themselves as good because they are getting rid of Black Witches and doing atrocities along the way. There's a metaphor in there somewhere. What I'm saying is I get why he has fixated on her, instead of the natural and probably ultimately more stable relationship with Gabrielle. That doesn't mean I like it. That doesn't mean I won't complain that most of the book to be the story to be about "boy saving catatonic girl". To all people who want to talk about preferences, see above on how he might unconsciously view being gay or bi. I'm not saying he isn't sexually attracted to the girl with the most cliché personality ever, but I'd also make the case he's attracted to Gabrielle and in the first book couldn't bring himself to admit it because he already had a love interest and the whole "not completely socially acceptable by pricks who tell me I'm evil and controlled most of my life". And a relationship with Gabrielle would be more stable in that... oh, god, spoilers. But let's just say something happens that would make both characters not able to trust one another, to not resent the other. I'm not saying they should hate each other, but I don't think they can have that close a relationship and it not be toxic. The second person Nathan brought in should have been the focus of the story. Considering the ending, that I won't spoil, but just once you know the ending, you should know why more time should have been spent with the second character to flesh some very important feelings and the like out (not spoiling things is hard). Now, let's talk about the stylized parts. So, in Half Bad she started the book in second person to draw the reader into Nathan's mind. To make you project yourself into his life and consider what you would do even when the book switched to first person (how I read that part). But if I had read that in an excerpt (since usually those are the beginning of the book) I wouldn't have read the book because I would have thought the whole thing or big chunks were in second person and I hate reading long pieces of text in second person, I can hardly stand it in small doses. When reading the beginning of this book I thought "why am I reading weird poetry I haven't read since high school?" Once again, it's there to draw you in, but I would have put the book down, not interested in reading something that disjointed and stylized, it's just not my thing to read even on and off for four hundred pages. Still, overall Nathan's voice is very strong. I do like that the book is in first person. That's a very important part of the book when the character is this much of a loose cannon and everywhere with his actions and emotions. PS please don't Americanize the text. I don't know anyone who likes when that is done. You're not that much different than us, we can usually through context get the view words that are different and get over the fact the quotes are single instead of a couple. Over all, I'd give this a solid 3.5 leaning more toward four since that's all I can do with goodreads. It's good. It's fun. I continues to explore nature vs. nurture. How we influence the people around us by making assumptions based on parentage and the like. It's also a good look at how toxic revenge is. How these people are basically tearing themselves apart and doing these atrocities because they feel they can because they are the "victims" or have a "higher moral ground". Which is always fun to read and think about. And I love a book that makes me think :)
review 2: I got this book as ARC (thanks to Penguin Books) and I have to say that this book is even better then the 1st bok in the triology and I can not wait for the third book!I love the world an the setting. I am so happy that Marcus makes an apperince in that book too.Nathan discovers his Gift hich is really eciting for me to read because it is really intense reading his animal's POV. The book is really intense and also very brutal and bloody. So if you don't like that I wouldn't suggest reading this since there are many fights.Sally Green's writing is just perfection. less
