review 1: 3.5 stars!I must say I enjoyed the afterword as much, if not more, than the rest of the story. I wish the afterword was written as a foreword; I believe I would have appreciated this novella more. I didn’t know what to expect from this book. As I began to read it, I thought it was written for children. In her afterword, she states “it is for adults because something was needed for people like me who suddenly found themselves orphans in midlife (pg.92).” She also explains that the people she talks to along her search are actual neighbors that posed for the book. The drawings are phenomenal and very realistic. I loved them! I recommend this book, but strong urge readers to read the afterword first.
review 2: SALIR ADELANTE - Creo que este es el tema del ... morelibro.This is a small book with lots of pictures. A super-quick read. A mini-read.This is a very touching book. The illustrations are beautiful. If you are not a fan of Sandra Cisneros, I'd suggest checking this book out anyway - just to flip through and marvel at the pictures. I have read it in both Spanish and English. I prefer the Spanish version.This book is about loss. It demonstrates that everyone experiences loss in different ways. I like how it illuminates the fact that everyone suffers. Everyone has tragedies in their life: death of a loved one, divorce, cancer, etc.If I am making this book sound depressing...it's not. It's thoughtful and I feel like it turns a bright eye toward the future. Yes, horrible things happen and we grieve. But we keep going forward, and we are surrounded by wonderful things that makes life worth living. less
