Synopsis:

Come share Christmas with your friends at the Vinyl Cafe

Christmas has always been a special time at the Vinyl Cafe. For two decades, Stuart McLean travelled across the country every December with The Vinyl Cafe Christmas tour, bringing the gift of laughter and light during the darkest days of the year. The hilarious world of Dave and Morley was even more real–more vibrant–during the holidays. For many, the Vinyl Cafe Christmas stories became beloved family traditions. Now, for the first time, they have been brought together in this special collection–including the classic “Dave Cooks the Turkey,” as well as five new, never before published Christmas stories. From mishaps with the Turlingtons and the tale of a young Dave’s first holiday disaster to the surprising “Christmas Ferret” and the touching sign off in “The Christmas Card,” these wonderful new stories will delight for years to come.

Brimming with charm and humour (often at Dave’s expense), these twelve stories entertain on every page, reminding us what the holidays are all about.

My Thoughts

I remember years ago I had found a book by Stuart McLean at a book sale. It was one of the Vinyl Cafe books and when I had done a big book cull, I got rid of it, thinking I wouldn’t be interested.

Come November of this year, I had been doing some shopping somewhere and I saw this book. I adore Christmas books and thought I’d give it a go. This book is gorgeous – the perfect gift for book lovers – and it came with one of those built in ribbon bookmarks, something I love. When December rolled around and I challenged myself to read 30 books in the month, I thought I’d dive in since it was short stories and I thought I could just peck at it and read one here or there.

However, things changed when I started reading this book and realized what a great writer Stuart McLean is (or, was, since he just passed away in February of this year), and how funny these stories are! I have never laughed so much while reading a book and when it finished, I was so sad. I just wanted more Christmas stories about Dave and Morley – they were all just so perfect for the month and great for getting me into the Christmas spirit.

Honestly, I can’t even pick a favourite story out of the bunch because they were all just so good, so funny, and just stories that makes you realize that the holidays aren’t about getting everything perfect, but just in being together and being nice to your neighbour, and that life is about laughing about the little things.

This is a book I would recommend to everyone and, like I said, it would make the perfect Christmas gift for the reader in your life. It made me so interested to read all of the Vinyl Cafe books and sad that I had gotten rid of the one I owned years ago. I want to dive right back into the lives of Dave and Morley and the people around them!
