review 1: I think it is true that certain books often come into a person's life just at the right time. It's rather curious that I just found out about Have You Seen Marie? last night at a time when I'm re-visiting my mother's death of twelve years ago. The book is set in San Antonio which is where my mother grew up. She never lost her love for her hometown and missed it desperately the 25 years my military father and our family were stationed away. She and my father eventually retired in San Antonio and after my mother passed away, my father remarried and remained in San Antonio in the house he and my mother had built. Now my father and stepmother are moving to a retirement community and I have had to finally go through many of my mother's treasures and possessions and rather r... moree-live her death. I very much relate to Sandra Cisneros' feeling like an orphan and whenever I visit San Antonio, I look for my mother in all her old haunts and in many of the landmarks of San Antonio.This is just a lovely little book that can be read in one sitting. There are beautiful illustrations by Ester Hernandez that add to the story tremendously.
review 2: The audio edition is read by the author and what a fine job she does. She reads it in both English and Spanish and there is an additional disk with artwork that goes with the story. Wonderful story on dealing with grief and how looking for a lost cat can connect you with the wider community which helps you in the grieving process. While it seems to be a kids book, Cisneros says in an afterword that she wrote it for adults as she was dealing with losing her mother. This book has a lightness of spirit that makes it easy to read and profoundly moving. less
