review 1: This book was like the others, full of potential, and untapped opportunities, but just short of the kind of read that keeps you mesmerized. These last two books were easy to leave and come back to, and even skip over pages.The things that really bothered me, were-The inappropriate use of the word irrelevance, in almost every book, honestly there is no excuse for that, and I am so over making excuses for it. The romance of Viking + Human should equal sizzle, but sadly it's just fizzle.I never want to trash anyone's creative enterprise, and I love the concept--I do, but I can't accept the repetitive grammatical errors, an the overall lack of faith that readers will not appreciate complex well planned paranormal story lines vs. predictable harlequin type rom... moreance.
review 2: DNR beyond page 118 With much respect and appreciation for S.H.'s detailed world building, Kiss of Wrath swings abruptly from horrific death, dismemberment, child rape, and sexual toture references to Li'l rascals high jinx with jarring speed. This Death Angels series just isn't for me. (Read all of the first one, half of the second, none of the third, but I have a weakness for orphaned kids & pets stories.) S.H.'s contemporary short story in a Christmas anthology from years ago brought her to my attention with its mix of humor and complicated characters in challenging circumstances. Her time travel Viking stories also deal with serious topics in a lighthearted manner without the added weight of keeping track of a complex blending of terminology, mythologies, and religions. [Sidebar: The description of one of the few (only?) Black characters as "licking his thick lips" put the final kibosh on any motivation to continue reading.] Will definitely pick up her next non-supernatural title. less
