review 1: If you love Indian food but feel too intimidated to make it yourself, you’ll love this book. Yes, some (but certainly not all) of the recipes are complicated, but they are so well explained that the mystery is knocked right out of them. Unless you live in a place large enough to have a Little India you may have trouble locating all of the ingredients, but at least with the glossary and clear explanations you’ll know what you are looking for.
review 2: I read this book because on the back it claimed to be Indian dishes adapted for an American kitchen. Some of the ingredients were extremely difficult to come by in the U.S. (i.e. mustard oil), so it was definitely a hunt for the ingredients. I also had to look up substitutes for ingredients I couldn't find (
... moreand I live right by two Indian groceries and one Asian grocery, and I still could not find all of the ingredients). The recipes were actually quite good (even with the substitutes or the entire removal of some ingredients). I learned how to use pomegranate molasses, which is now my favorite ingredients to cook with! So yummy! If you're new to Indian cooking I would not suggest this book. The instructions are not clear enough for a beginner, and you might have trouble knowing how to substitute hard or impossible to find ingredients. If you're already a little experienced then give this book a whirl. less
